Australia and New Zealand are having a moment, especially when it comes to wine. The industry has matured, and the wines coming out of prestigious large and small wineries are among the best on earth.  There are approximately 2,500 wineries in Australia alone, and over 6,000 grape growers! There are passionate people behind each bottle of wine; behind every vine.

After the bushfires last year and the export tariffs this year, visiting and supporting your local wineries is a MUST DO for 2021.

And as long as wine lovers around the world insist on finding solid, original wines of expression, wine in the Australian continent will continue to thrive. Visiting the wine country is a memorable experience. Grapes grow in the most beautiful places, and, since there’s no better way to enjoy wine than visiting their source, we have put together a state by state list of wineries than not only make good wine but that are gorgeous places to visit and enjoy a sit down meal with stunning views.

 

Victoria

Ten Minutes by Tractor, Mornington Peninsula

Cold, refreshing breezes run through the Mornington Peninsula. The neatly aligned vines run as far as you can see. This is an elegant site to contemplate the art of growing grapes, and in Ten Minutes by Tractor, you’re in good hands.  Wines made with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay excel, and you can try them in the winery’s cellar door or during a nice meal at the restaurant on premise.

Levantine Hill, Yarra Valley

This farm is all about peace and quiet; all you hear is the wind birds singing over the vines at Levantine Hill. This winery makes masterful sparkling wines, but reds and whites are notable too. Try the sweet Estate Melange Botrytis wine and experience one of most luscious dessert wines in the country.  Ezard Restaurant, within the winery, is a recognized restaurant in Victoria, and there’s more, you can take a helicopter tour to see the hilly Yarra Valley as you’ve never seen it before.

 

Oakridge Wines, Yarra Valley

The massive, modern building that makes Oakridge winery and its restaurant is a monument worth a visit, and the surrounding green vineyards complete the picture. Everything from herbal, flinty Sauvignon Blanc to juicy Syrah is available to try at Oakridge’s cellar door and their award-winning restaurant.

 

Queensland

Ocean View Estates, Ocean View

You’ll find this spectacular place north of Brisbane. The young winery makes magnificent wines just a few miles from the Moreton Bay. The family-friendly estate has a dynamic cellar door, beautiful vineyards surrounded by nature, and a pretty restaurant in charge of the talented Chef Tony Tierney. Wines are splendid, especially the whites, and if you don’t feel like wine, they make beer too. 

 

New South Wales

Hungerford Hill Winery, Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley is a sight to behold; a paradisiac landscape tucked into the Great Dividing Range. Within lies Hungerford Hill. A beautiful winery with an even prettier vineyard. Check out the sculpture courtyard; it’s practically an open-air museum. The Epic Series comprises the winery’s best wines, amongst them, their Shiraz is contemplative and best enjoyed in the calm countryside. 

 

Crooked River Wines, South Coast

This is a pretty-looking winery with astounding vineyards. A perfect place for weddings, Crooked River Wines is home to a fabulous restaurant and a friendly cellar door. Try something different, what about a pink Chardonnay or a bottle of Chambourcin? Good wine, knowledgeable staff, and a handsome setting a few miles south of Sydney.

 

Bimbadgen, Hunter Valley

Semillon, Shiraz, and Chardonnay vines thrive in Bimbadgen’s old vineyards. The fifteen hectares of vines planted on the Palmers Lane vineyard are an exquisite view, as they’re enveloped by fig trees in a rural background. The winery’s award-winning restaurant Esca is one of the most revered fine-dining scenarios in New South Wales.

South Australia

Skillogalee Winery, Clare Valley

Put on a jacket and visit the foggy vineyards at Clare Valley. Skillogalee Winery is a family-owned boutique winery that makes everything by hand; these are artisanal wines to seek. Riesling is the star of the show, but Gewurztraminer and their Cabernet - Malbec rosé are both beauties. Walk the vineyards, taste the wine, and have lunch at the on-site restaurant. If weather permits, eat alfresco on their lovely porch.

 

Hentley Farm Wines, Barossa

The Barossa Valley is a splendid natural area, the weather is warm and the gnarly vines that dot the landscape are centuries old. If you’re into wine, this is a mecca for full-bodied, fruity wines made from Shiraz. Walk along the Greenock creek and experience nature at a prime wine site. Relax at the cozy cellar door or restaurant and taste some of the finest wines in the state.

 

Penfolds Magill Estate, Adelaide

Adelaide is a lovely town to visit, and if you’re in the neighborhood, visit Penfolds Magill Estate. This place is stunning, not only the winery and the restaurant are world class, but the vineyards on Adelaide Hills, from which you get a view of the city, are without compare. 

 

Western Australia

Voyager Estate, Margaret River

This grand estate, built in the style of European chateaus, is larger than life. The winery is impressive; its organic vineyards are excellent for a stroll and its gardens, from which they source many of the ingredients for their restaurant, is full of color. Try the Cabernet and the Chardonnay; they’re considered amongst the best in Margaret River.

 

Cullen Estate, Margaret River

Cullen is a legendary estate in Margaret River. Collectors covet their wines, and you can enjoy them in the gorgeous cellar door or their refined restaurant. Tour the winery and visit the two biodynamic fields: Cullen Estate Vineyard and the Cullen Mangan Vineyard. This place is so close to the coast that you can smell the lovely scent of the sea.

 

Vasse Felix, Margaret River

This is one of the founding wineries in the region, they have earned cult status, and that’s reason enough to pay a visit. Their Icon wines, Tom Cullity Cabernet Sauvignon and Heytesbury Chardonnay, are expensive but well worth the price. The vineyards and cellar rooms are dramatic, and you can’t miss the art gallery, a perfect way to get inspired. 

 

Tasmania

Home Hill Winery

This peaceful place in Huon Valley, a few minutes south of Hobart, is a real paradise. The climate is refreshing, and there’s green everywhere. The quiet countryside is an ideal getaway for a few days, and with the winery’s gold medal wines, you don’t even have to move. Their Kelly’s Sparkling Cuvée is celebratory, which is why many people come here for special occasions.

Moorilla Estate

From Cabernet Sauvignon to Pinot Noir, and with excellent sparkling wines, Moorilla is a wine lover’s paradise. If you woke up here, you would think you’re in Europe. The biodynamic vineyards are eye catching, and the overall natural feel is unparalleled. The Estate Pinot Gris is a charm, and so is the “Primavera” Chardonnay, two white wines with a sense of place. The winery’s own osteria is a delightful eatery with unbeatable views of the leafy vineyards.

 

New Zealand

Man o' War Vineyards, Auckland

If you’re into dramatic sceneries, visit Man o’ War in Auckland; the vineyards all have spectacular views of the coastline. Connoisseurs recognize the winery for its premium wines in all styles, from structured reds to aromatic whites. Akarua Wines, Central Otago

This cellar door in Arrowtown has some of the most amazing views in New Zealand's southern island, the high peaks surrounding this historical town are overwhelming, and the sense that there’s no one around you is a spiritual experience.  Vineyards in Central Otago are further south than any other vineyard in the world. If you think you know Pinot Noir, think again, the stuff here is exquisite, and the setting is perfect for a glass of wine and a good meal.
